Chennai, 29 April (H.S.): The Tamil Nadu police have suspended leave for all personnel from May 2 until further orders as part of heightened security arrangements for the counting of votes scheduled on May 4.

The directive, issued by the Director General of Police (DGP), applies to officers across all ranks and is aimed at ensuring full-strength deployment for election-related duties across the state.

Senior officials said elaborate security measures are being put in place at counting centres, with additional personnel to be deployed in sensitive and vulnerable areas to maintain law and order.

Strict vigil will be maintained at counting centres and strong rooms, where Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are stored under round-the-clock security with CCTV surveillance, armed guards, and restricted access.

According to the order, no police personnel will be allowed to proceed on leave during this critical period. However, exemptions will be granted in exceptional cases, including medical emergencies, maternity leave, childcare responsibilities, and academic commitments.

Police presence will be intensified not only at counting centres but also in surrounding areas to manage crowds and prevent any potential law and order issues following the announcement of results.

The Tamil Nadu Assembly elections were held in a single phase on April 23 and witnessed peaceful polling across constituencies.

Following the completion of voting, EVMs have been securely transported to designated counting centres under strict supervision.

Officials said preparations for the May 4 counting are progressing at a brisk pace, with close coordination between the police, election authorities, and district administrations to ensure a smooth and incident-free process across the state.
