New Delhi, 29 April (H.S.): Veteran Indian golfer and former Indian Open champion Vijay Kumar died Tuesday in his hometown Lucknow at age 57 from a heart attack, the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) confirmed Wednesday.
PGTI expressed condolences, noting Kumar—born September 29, 1968—dominated domestic golf from the mid-1990s to early 2000s, winning the 2002 Indian Open (one of only nine Indians to do so) and four Order of Merit titles. He represented India at the 1999 Alfred Dunhill Cup in St Andrews, Scotland.
Renowned for skill, consistency, competitive spirit, and exemplary conduct, Kumar inspired generations and advanced professional golf in India. PGTI Chairman Kapil Dev mourned him as a true legend whose humility made him a role model, calling his loss devastating. CEO Amandeep Johl hailed his 2002 triumph and titles as proud history, predicting lasting inspiration.
