Kolkata, 21 April (H.S.) : Ahead of the commencement of the West Bengal Assembly election process, a section of Election Commission officials has reportedly issued stern warnings to officers-in-charge (OCs) of police stations and Sub-Divisional Police Officers (SDPOs) across the state, according to sources in the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO).
Administrative sources said the warnings were conveyed through phone calls, text messages, and in-person communication. Officials were reportedly told that there would be zero tolerance for any poll-related violence or disturbance during the election period.
According to sources, the Commission has made it clear that in the event of any unrest, the concerned OC and SDPO would be held directly accountable. It has also warned that strict disciplinary action would be taken against officers found negligent in their duties.
The warning further stated that if any police official is found to be involved in incidents of lawlessness, the concerned OC or SDPO could face suspension. In cases involving serious violence, particularly the use of bombs or firearms during polling, the officer-in-charge of the concerned police station could even be sent on compulsory retirement.
The message underscores that the primary responsibility for maintaining law and order during the elections will rest with local police leadership.
The development comes amid political controversy, with the Trinamool Congress questioning the recent “activism” of agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate, Central Bureau of Investigation, and Income Tax Department ahead of the polls. The party has also raised concerns over the neutrality of the Election Commission.
Against this backdrop, the Commission’s tough message to the police has now come to light.
