
Colombo/New Delhi, 20 April (H.S.): Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan reached Nuwara Eliya on Monday during his visit to Sri Lanka and inspected sites under the India-funded “Indian Housing Project” being implemented for the Indian-origin Tamil community.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Vice President Radhakrishnan, who is on a two-day official visit to Sri Lanka since Sunday, visited houses built under the third phase of the project at Lidl’sdale Estate in Ragala, Nuwara Eliya, and interacted with the beneficiaries. This is his first bilateral visit to Sri Lanka.
He expressed happiness at meeting the Indian-origin Tamil community and said that the Government of India and the people of India remain deeply committed to the welfare of Tamils living in Sri Lanka.
So far, the Government of India has facilitated the construction of 50,000 houses for Tamil families living in Sri Lanka’s northern and eastern provinces as well as for Indian-origin Tamil families in plantation areas. An additional 10,000 houses will be provided under the fourth phase of the Indian Housing Project.
