Dhaka, 20 April (H.S.):

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Monday formally honoured veteran fast bowler Rubel Hossain for his retirement from international cricket ahead of the second ODI against New Zealand.

The ceremony took place at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium and was attended by Rubel’s former teammates as well as members of the current national side. The moment turned emotional when Rubel arrived on the ground with his young son. Formal farewells of this kind are rare in Bangladesh cricket, making the tribute arranged by the BCB especially significant.

BCB president Tamim Iqbal presented Rubel with a framed jersey and a commemorative memento in recognition of his contribution to Bangladesh cricket.

Speaking on the occasion, Rubel said, “After I announced my retirement, Tamim Iqbal personally called me and expressed his wish to honour me. That was a proud moment for me. I am grateful to the BCB for the way this ceremony was organised.”

The 36-year-old Rubel Hossain played 27 Tests, 104 ODIs and 28 T20 Internationals in his career, taking a total of 193 wickets. The most memorable moment of his career came during the 2015 World Cup, when he dismissed two England batters in consecutive deliveries to help Bangladesh secure a historic win and reach the knockout

stage.

Rubel also made a special mention of his coach Sarwar Imran, saying his guidance played a major role in shaping his career. He added that he would remain forever grateful for that support.

Fast bowler Taskin Ahmed also described Rubel’s 2015 World Cup performance as one of the tournament’s most unforgettable moments.
