20 Apr (HS): The chief of a social organisation (NGO) in Nagpur has been granted
police custody by the court. The accused Riyaz Fazil Qazi was arrested on
Saturday following complaints against hi relating to sexual abuse, and pressure
for religious conversion.
Some
women employees of the NGO lodged a police complaint against Qazi. According to
the complaint by a 23-year-old woman worker who was working as HR Chief and Administrating
Officer since 2023, on July 18. 2024 Qazi called her in his cabin after formal
celebration in the office. Qazi hugged her, kissed her forehead and said ‘I
will not allow you to go home today’. Under fear she kept mum under fear of
losing job.
Qazi frequently
tried to approach physically. In one incident he unplugged the CCTV camera.
Following opposition he started collecting personal information and also created
a fake social media group, the complainant has alleged.
Some
employees shared similar experience and left the job. A group of victims when
approached the NGO’s office on April 18, it was locked. The group then approached
police and registered a complaint.
Nagpur’s
Mankapur police Inspector Haresh Kaslekar said Qazi was arrested on Saturday
late night and presented before the court on Sunday. The court granted hi
police remand till April 23. Further investigation has been initiated.
