Indian benchmark indices opened strongly Thursday but succumbed to sustained profit-taking, closing with modest losses despite robust mid and small-cap gains. Investors still pocketed ₹2.28 lakh crore in market cap growth.
Intraday Volatility Marks Session
Sensex surged 566 points to 78,677.56 at open, peaking at 78,730.32 before profit booking erased over 1,055 points from highs. It recovered partially to settle 122.56 points (0.16%) lower at 77,988.68.
Nifty mirrored the pattern, jumping 154 points to 24,385.20 and touching 24,400.95 before sliding nearly 300 points. It ended 34.55 points (0.14%) down at 24,196.75 after late buying support.
Sectoral Divergence, Broader Strength
IT, capital goods, metals, consumer durables, FMCG, healthcare, PSE, and tech indices advanced. Autos, banks, and oil & gas faced selling pressure.
Midcap index rose 0.63%; smallcap gained 0.89%. BSE market cap hit ₹460.83 lakh crore (provisional) from ₹458.55 lakh crore Wednesday.
BSE saw 4,494 active stocks (2,809 advances, 1,538 declines, 147 unchanged); NSE 2,968 (1,965 up, 1,003 down). Sensex: 14 gainers, 16 losers; Nifty: 25 each.
Top Gainers: Hindalco (+2.81%), Adani Enterprises (+2.77%), Trent (+2.64%), Adani Ports (+2.51%), Eternal (+2.44%).
Top Losers: HDFC Bank (-1.78%), ONGC (-1.69%), HDFC Life (-1.40%), Titan (-1.34%), Apollo Hospitals (-1.16%).
