New Delhi, 16 April (H.S.):
Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya announced plans to introduce criminal provisions against trafficking and promotion of prohibited substances, signaling a zero-tolerance stance on doping during the WADA Global Anti-Doping Intelligence and Investigation Network (GAIN) summit inauguration.
Dr. Mandaviya described doping as evolving from individual lapses to organized multinational syndicates, necessitating coordinated international efforts. India remains committed to sporting excellence alongside integrity, backed by the robust National Anti-Doping Act 2022 and its 2025 amendments aligning with global standards.
He highlighted a doubling of tests from 4,000 in 2019 to nearly 8,000 last year, with positive cases dropping from 5.6% to under 2%—testifying to effective awareness. Initiatives like Khelo India and Fit India foster sports culture, while timely education prevents inadvertent violations.
NADA's workshops, digital campaigns, and Know Your Medicine app aid athletes, including para-athletes.
WADA President Vitold Banka stressed agency-law enforcement collaboration via Interpol and Europol; NADA DG Anant Kumar emphasized intelligence-led strategies beyond mere testing.
