Accra, 14 April (H.S.):

Ghana has made a major move ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 by appointing experienced Portuguese manager Carlos Queiroz as head coach of its national football team. The Ghana Football Association announced the decision on Monday, with the 73-year-old set to begin work immediately.

Queiroz will take charge of the Black Stars as they prepare for the expanded tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The appointment comes after Otto Addo’s departure earlier this month, leaving Ghana without a coach at a critical stage of its build-up.

The veteran tactician is headed to his fifth consecutive World Cup as a coach, a remarkable milestone in itself. He previously guided Portugal to the round of 16 at the 2010 World Cup and later coached Iran across three successive editions of the competition.

Born in Mozambique and formerly a goalkeeper, Queiroz has also coached Egypt, Japan, Colombia and South Africa during a long and varied career. Ghana will compete in Group L at the 2026 World Cup alongside Croatia, England and Panama, making the assignment both demanding and high-stakes.
