Washington, 14 April (H.S.):

Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell of California has said he will resign from Congress after facing serious sexual misconduct allegations that have drawn bipartisan pressure for him to step aside.

In a statement, Swalwell said it would be wrong to expel any member of Congress without due process just days after allegations emerge, but added that it was also unfair for his constituents to have him distracted from his duties.

He said he would resign his House seat, though he did not specify a departure date.

The controversy intensified after multiple women accused him of misconduct ranging from sexual harassment to rape, while the House Ethics Committee opened an investigation into the claims.

The Manhattan district attorney’s office also said it had begun examining one of the allegations.

Swalwell, who has served in Congress since 2013 and previously ran for president in 2020, was also a prominent figure in Donald Trump’s impeachment investigations.
