Kolkata, Apr 11 (H.S.): Mamata Banerjee on Saturday paid tribute to renowned painter Jamini Roy on his birth anniversary through a post on social media platform X.

In her message, the Chief Minister described Roy as a “bright star of modern Indian painting and the pride of Bengal,” and extended her heartfelt tributes on his birth anniversary.

Following her message, members of the art fraternity and the general public also remembered the legendary artist and paid their respects.

Notably, Jamini Roy (1887–1972) was one of the leading figures of modern Indian art. Born in the Bankura district of West Bengal, he developed a unique style inspired by traditional Bengali folk art, particularly the patua or patachitra tradition. His works prominently depicted rural life, religious themes and folk culture. Roy played a significant role in giving Indian art a global identity and was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1955.
