
New Delhi, 07 March (H.S.): IndiGo has become the nation's pioneering airline with more than 1,000 women pilots, announced on the eve of International Women's Day, underscoring the rapid rise of female participation in India's aviation sector.In a statement Saturday, the budget carrier celebrated amplifying girl power in its fleet, with women comprising 17.5% of its pilot workforce—over three times the global average—and reflecting a commitment to a diverse, inclusive workplace mirroring evolving aspirations among Indian women in aviation.
Women constitute over 45% of IndiGo's total workforce, with equal opportunities across roles: more than 30% in airport operations, nearly 25% in the operations control center, over 20% in finance, above 15% in digital functions, and exceeding 23% in leadership positions.
Group Chief Human Resources Officer Sukhjit Singh Pasricha remarked, On International Women’s Day's eve, we proudly note IndiGo's over 1,000 women pilots—the highest globally—embodying girl power as we wing the nation forward, dedicated to more opportunities for talented women shaping aviation's future.
Since 2015, IndiGo has expanded women-focused recruitment, training, and scholarships, propelling it among airlines with the fastest-growing female pilot cohorts; India boasts 12-15% women among its 15,000-plus commercial pilots—outpacing many developed nations—thanks to IndiGo and Air India.
Notably, Sarla Thakral became India's first woman pilot in 1936 at age 21, trailblazing aviation access for generations.
