Kathmandu, 05 March (H.S.): Nepal's voters head to the polls Thursday in a pivotal parliamentary election, the first since last year's explosive Gen-Z protests toppled the government and plunged the Himalayan nation into political flux—marking a critical test for democratic renewal amid calls for fearless participation.

Polling stations across the country will open at 7:00 AM local time (7:15 AM IST, as Nepal runs 15 minutes ahead of India) for the 275-seat federal parliament, with voting wrapping up at 5:00 PM. Of these, 165 seats will fill via direct contests, while 110 allocate through proportional representation—a mixed system blending majoritarian and inclusive mandates.

Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari urged the nation's over 18.9 million registered voters—9.66 million men and 9.24 million women—to cast ballots without fear. This is your chance to shape Nepal's future, he emphasized in a pre-poll address, as per Election Commission statements verified via Google News and Reuters dispatches (March 5, 2026).

The ballot features fierce competition: 3,406 candidates under the first-past-the-post system and 3,135 party lists for proportional seats. Results for direct seats could emerge swiftly, but proportional tallies—deciding over a third of parliament—may take two to three extra days, potentially shattering records.

Nepal's 2022 polls dragged two weeks for final counts; faster delivery here signals electoral maturity.

Echoes of Youth-Led Upheaval

This vote follows the September 2025 Gen-Z uprising, where youth-driven fury over corruption, unemployment, and inequality sparked nationwide riots, forcing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's ouster. Interim leader Sushila Karki then steered stability efforts, paving the way for these elections to restore legitimacy.
