Kolkata, 26 March (H.S.) : A violent incident on the roof of a multi-storey building in Patuli on Wednesday night left one man dead and another seriously injured, raising serious concerns in the densely populated neighbourhood. The deceased has been identified as Rahul Dey, 36, while the injured victim is Jit Mukhopadhyay.
According to local sources, the deceased and the injured were acquaintances but had not been in contact for a long time. On Wednesday night, a party was underway at Jit’s flat, which Rahul was also attending. Some attendees were drinking on the rooftop, and following a dispute, shots were fired. Neighbours reported hearing three rounds of gunfire around midnight, after which those present fled the scene.
Rahul’s mother and brother arrived shortly after and found him in a bloodied condition. Jit, seriously injured, was taken to a hospital, where doctors pronounced Rahul dead. Jit continues to receive treatment. Upon receiving information about the incident, police teams from Patuli police station and the Lalbazar Homicide Department reached the site to initiate an investigation.
Sources revealed that Jit had multiple prior complaints registered against him and had been involved in various anti-social activities. Some locals claim he was closely associated with the councillor of Ward 101 from the Trinamool Congress. He had also been arrested several times in the past over similar disputes.
Preliminary police investigations suggest that the firing resulted from a dispute between two groups over syndicate operations and money distribution. Four individuals, Deep Roy, Bidhan Bandyopadhyay, Raja Banik, and Jayanta Ghosh, have been arrested in connection with the case. Local residents have demanded strict action, particularly in the context of the ongoing assembly elections.
