Kolkata, 23 March (H.S.): Senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh on Monday courted controversy after issuing a warning to the police during an election campaign in West Bengal’s Kharagpur, from where he is contesting in the upcoming Assembly polls.

Addressing supporters, Ghosh said that he had earlier “settled scores” with anti-social elements when he was elected from the constituency and would do so again if required.

“People of Kharagpur had elected me earlier and I had taken care of all goons. I will do the same again. Such things will not be allowed in Kharagpur,” he said.

Ghosh, a former state BJP president, had won the Kharagpur seat in the 2016 Assembly elections. However, he was not fielded from the constituency in 2021, when actor-turned-politician Hiran Chatterjee contested and won the seat for the BJP.

Amid controversies surrounding Chatterjee, the party has renominated Ghosh from Kharagpur for the upcoming polls.

With his return to the constituency, Ghosh has intensified campaign rhetoric, drawing sharp reactions from political observers.
