New Delhi, 23 March (H.S.):

The Reserve Bank of India infused Rs 79,256 crore of temporary liquidity into the banking system Monday through an overnight Variable Rate Repo (VRR) auction.

RBI said the funds went in at a 5.26% cut-off and weighted average rate – well below the Rs 1 lakh crore notified amount. Advance tax outflows have slashed surplus liquidity sharply.

Banking system liquidity faces a deficit of about Rs 65,395.64 crore as of March 23. On March 20 RBI had injected Rs 25,101 crore via three-day VRR; March 17 saw Rs 48,014 crore through seven-day VRR. Since January 2026 the central bank has also added Rs 3.50 lakh crore durable liquidity via open market purchases of government securities.
