Ballia, 23 March (HS): A
24-year-old woman died purportedly during a surgical operation at a private
hospital in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia, sparking protests from her family members
who claimed incompetence and sought stern punishment against the doctors,
police said on Monday. The event occurred on Sunday at a private facility in
Ballia's Kotwali region. The victim, named as Anisha Rai of Devkali village in
the Sukhpura police station area, was having kidney stone surgery when she
reportedly died from severe bleeding, according to authorities. Following the
event, enraged relatives caused a scene in the hospital and held a sit-in
protest outside the hospital, demanding that the facility be shut and a FIR
filed against those responsible.
Senior
administrative and police officials, including Additional District Magistrate
Anil Kumar and Additional Superintendent of Police Kripa Shankar, arrived late
Sunday night and reassured demonstrators that the culprits will face legal
punishment. According to the police, the body has been submitted for a
postmortem examination. The deceased's spouse Shivanshu Rai filed a complaint
against five physicians (Jyotsna Singh, Apoorva Singh, Deepak Singh, Sanjay
Singh, and Rohan Gupta) under Section 103 (1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
(BNS) for murder. According to the FIR, the complainant said that his wife was
brought to the hospital at 2 p.m. on Sunday for a kidney stone surgery, for
which Rs one lakh was paid.
He
said that the physicians promised a laser-based surgery but actually performed
a large abdominal procedure, resulting in her death. The FIR further claimed
that medical officials then instructed him to immediately relocate his wife to
Lucknow in an attempt to conceal the occurrence. According to Station House
Officer Kshitij Tripathi, attempts are on to apprehend the accused physicians,
and further investigation is ongoing.
