Prime Minister Narendra Modi has entered the record books by completing 8,931 consecutive days as head of an elected government, surpassing the previous benchmark of 8,930 days held by Sikkim’s former Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling. The milestone was achieved on Sunday, 22 March 2026, with Modi’s continuous service spanning both his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister and his current third term as Prime Minister.

Combining his three terms as Chief Minister of Gujarat, starting in 2001, and his uninterrupted run as Prime Minister since 2014, Modi has now spent over 24 years in leadership, without taking a single day of leave.

Party veterans and Union ministers have described the achievement as a historic milestone, highlighting his unbroken commitment to public service and governance.

Home Minister Amit Shah praised the feat in a social media post, saying the 8,931‑day tenure is built on perseverance, hard work and an unwavering sense of duty. He said Modi’s record‑length service in nation‑first governance and integrity‑driven decision‑making has earned him unprecedented public affection.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh hailed Modi as the longest‑serving head of government in Indian history, noting that his journey from Gujarat’s Chief Minister to the nation’s Prime Minister has been a continuous path of service. Singh said the record reflects the trust of crores of citizens and stands as a testament to Modi’s dedicated leadership and commitment to the country.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta called the milestone a fulfilment of the “Antyodaya” vision, saying Modi has redefined the meaning of development through bold, forward‑looking and courageous policy decisions. She added that the Prime Minister’s long‑standing record of connecting with the common people has become a source of inspiration for all those engaged in public life.
