Washington, 21 March (H.S.):
President Donald Trump declared Friday that the United States is getting very close to meeting our objectives in the ongoing conflict with Iran, hinting at a possible de-escalation of military operations that erupted on February 28.
In a Truth Social post, Trump described the US efforts as great Military efforts in the Middle East, marking his strongest signal yet of intent to wind down hostilities even as Iranian drone and missile barrages continue to rattle the region.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump emphasized dominance, stating, I think we have won. I don't want to do a ceasefire. You know you don't do a ceasefire when you're literally obliterating the other side.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt echoed this on X, noting the operation was projected to last 4-6 weeks but is progressing ahead of schedule at the three-week mark. Day by day, the Iranian Regime is being crippled, and their ability to threaten the United States and our allies is being significantly weakened, she wrote.
The announcement comes against a backdrop of surging global oil prices, now with Brent crude at $112.19 per barrel, up 3.26% Friday amid fears of prolonged disruptions. Iran's de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz – through which 20% of the world's oil flows – has crippled exports, prompting the US Treasury to temporarily lift sanctions on Iranian oil loaded onto vessels before March 20.
This move, effective through April 19, will release about 140 million barrels to markets, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent explained, aiming to ease supply pressures without rewarding Tehran.
