Washington/Tokyo, 16 March (H.S.): U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stern ultimatum to NATO allies, cautioning that failure to aid in safeguarding the Strait of Hormuz would spell a very bad future for the alliance. In a Sunday phone interview with the Financial Times, Trump invoked U.S. support for Ukraine against Russia, demanding reciprocity through naval assets like minesweepers to neutralize threats in the vital waterway choked by Iran.

Those benefiting from the strait must ensure nothing adverse happens there, he asserted, questioning which nations would shirk this small task.

Trump reiterated unwavering U.S. commitment to NATO aboard Air Force One from Florida, while voicing frustration at British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's delayed endorsement of U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran—despite the UK's status as America's closest partner. NATO, comprising 32 members including newcomers like Sweden, prioritizes collective defense but not offensive wars initiated by members.

Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated Monday her nation harbors no immediate plans to dispatch vessels for Hormuz security, despite Trump's overtures to allies. Takaichi noted no direct Tokyo request but affirmed deliberations on requisite measures ahead of her Thursday Washington summit with Trump.
