Jayasuriya Steps Down as Sri Lanka Coach Post T20 World Cup Exit

Kandy, 01 March (H.S.): Sanath Jayasuriya announced his resignation as Sri Lanka's head coach following the team's Super 8 elimination from the 2026 T20 World Cup, after a heartbreaking five-run defeat to Pakistan on Saturday night. In post-match remarks, Jayasuriya stated he believed it was time to hand over the responsibility. I hinted during the England series two months ago that I wouldn't stay long-term, he said.

I aimed to exit on a high after the World Cup, but that didn't happen—I'm regretful about it.His contract runs until June 2026, though he left unclear whether he'll lead the upcoming limited-overs series against Afghanistan from March 13-25.

Discussions with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) are pending, he noted.Since taking charge in July 2024, Jayasuriya's tenure saw ups and downs: a historic ODI series win over India at home, a Test victory in England, and team rankings lifted to No. 4 in ODIs, No. 6 in Tests and T20Is, with a near-50% win rate.

Sri Lanka started the World Cup brightly by beating Australia but lost four straight, including all three Super 8 games. Jayasuriya admitted expectations were higher, urging better pressure performances in batting and bowling. Apologizing to fans, he affirmed cricket as the nation's top sport and the team's duty to honor their sentiments.
