Wayanad, 28 Feb (H.S.)In a major rehabilitation initiative for families affected by the devastating Wayanad landslides, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) is set to hand over the first phase of newly constructed houses to survivors today. A total of 51 houses, completed under the initial phase of the project, will be formally handed over at a function scheduled for 4 pm.
IUML State President Panakkad Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal will hand over the keys to the beneficiaries. Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi will attend the ceremony as the chief guest. Senior leaders of the Muslim League at both the national and state levels, along with prominent United Democratic Front (UDF) leaders, are expected to be present.
The housing project has been developed at Thrikkai Pettah Vellithode in Meppadi Panchayat, one of the worst-affected regions during the landslides. Construction has been completed on 11.5 acres of land identified for the rehabilitation scheme. Each house has been built on eight cents of land, with a total built-up area of 1,060 square feet.
Designed to ensure safety, dignity, and comfort, each unit includes three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, a dining hall, a work area, and a sit-out. The project forms part of the Muslim League’s larger commitment to construct and hand over 105 houses to families displaced by the disaster.
Of the total 105 houses, 51 have been completed in the first phase and are ready for occupation. The second phase of construction has already commenced adjacent to the current project site to create an integrated residential community. Party leaders have stated that the remaining houses are expected to be completed by May 30.
The initiative is viewed as a significant step toward long-term rehabilitation, offering permanent housing to families who lost their homes and livelihoods in the natural calamity. The project underscores coordinated political and community efforts to restore stability and rebuild lives in Wayanad’s disaster-hit regions.
