Kolkata, 27 February (H.S.): A case of sexual harassment has been filed against Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and lawyer Firdous Shamim. A police officer confirmed this on Friday.

According to police sources, a junior female lawyer filed a written complaint at the Hare Street police station in central Kolkata on Wednesday. The complaint alleged that Firdous Shamim sexually harassed her, made obscene comments, and engaged in inappropriate physical behavior. She also alleged intimidation and wrongful restraint.

Based on the woman lawyer's complaint, the police have registered a case under sections 74, 75, 79, 351(2), and 126(2) of the BNS. These sections include serious charges such as outraging modesty, sexual harassment, criminal intimidation, and illegal confinement. Many of these sections are non-bailable.

Confirming the matter, Indira Mukhopadhyay, Deputy Commissioner of the Central Division of Kolkata Police, said that a female lawyer has filed a complaint alleging that the accused made sexually charged comments, behaved indecently, and attempted to intimidate her.

The police are currently investigating the matter.
