Wayanad ,26 Feb (H.S.): Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi today laid the foundation stone for a housing project promised by the Congress for families affected by the Mundakkai–Chooralmala landslides in Wayanad. The initiative aims to construct 100 houses within six months for those who lost their homes and livelihoods in the devastating disaster.

At a public function held in Kalpetta, the two leaders jointly inaugurated the housing scheme and also distributed financial assistance to affected families. A total of 40 beneficiaries received ₹5 lakh each as part of immediate relief support. The event was attended by local leaders, party workers and residents from the worst-hit areas.

Addressing the gathering, Rahul Gandhi said the people of Wayanad had faced the tragedy with remarkable courage and unity. “I have witnessed firsthand the collective strength with which you confronted this disaster. The people of Wayanad are like family to us, and we will always stand by you,” he said. He also congratulated the Indian Union Muslim League for completing its share of housing commitments for the victims.

Priyanka Gandhi said the scenes of destruction caused by the landslides were unforgettable. She noted that efforts were made at multiple levels to secure maximum assistance for the victims. “We consistently raised Wayanad’s concerns in Parliament and even organised protests demanding that the disaster be declared a national calamity,” she said. Stressing that their intervention went beyond politics, she assured families that support would continue.

She acknowledged that the housing project faced several procedural hurdles, including multiple approvals, which led to delays in commencing construction. “It was painful that we could not begin earlier, but we are committed to completing the homes at the earliest,” she added.

Of the 100 houses planned, the first 50 will be constructed at Kunnambetta in Meppadi. Each house will be built on eight cents of land with a built-up area of 1,041 square feet. The design also allows for the addition of a future upper floor, ensuring long-term sustainability for beneficiary families.
