New Delhi, 26 February (H.S.): Vote counting for the Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) elections has been postponed from February 26 to March 7, as notified by Election Officer and retired Justice Talwant Singh. The notification cites the oversized ballot papers necessitated by 221 candidates, rendering the originally allocated venue at the Delhi High Court Extension Block inadequate.
Upon the election officer's request, Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya approved the S-Block Lounge, where counting will occur on the seventh floor. Candidates and agents can monitor proceedings via screens on the sixth floor. The three-day BCD elections concluded on February 23, with over 57,000 lawyers casting votes.
During polling, 79 candidates faced suspension for model code violations, later reinstated after successful appeals. This poll will elect 23 of the 25 BCD members, featuring 221 contenders and, for the first time per Supreme Court directive, 30% reservation for women candidates.
