
New Delhi, 25 February (H.S.): Jatinder Mehra, a stalwart of India's steel and metals industry, passed away on February 24. He was 86 years old. Mehra was a revered titan of India's steel sector, whose foresight steered many of Essar Group's landmark achievements.
In a post on 'X' on Wednesday, the Essar Group wrote, The Essar family is deeply saddened by the passing of Jatinder Mehra ji. Mehra served as Vice Chairman of the group's Metals & Mining division, where he provided strategic direction to its metals and mining businesses.
The group stated that Mehra led several transformative projects, turning visions into reality. He inspired teams with his clear thinking, commitment, and leadership.
The company revealed that during his tenure at Essar Group, Mehra played a pivotal role in expanding steel production capacity at Hazira and advancing integrated steel projects, including the proposed Paradip steel plant in Odisha. His leadership contributed to strengthening the group's presence in the global steel sector.
Prior to Essar, Mehra held several senior positions in the public sector steel industry. He served as Executive Director at Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and later as Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL).
