Guwahati, 25 February (HS): Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Governor of Assam, attended the “Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan” programme organised under Sewa Sankalp Saptah at the KBR Auditorium of Cotton University on Tuesday.
The programme was organised by Lok Bhavan in collaboration with Cotton University and included a prize distribution ceremony to honour students for their participation in awareness initiatives. Students actively took part in slogan writing and poster-making competitions centred on the theme of a drug-free India.
Addressing the gathering, Governor Acharya highlighted the serious dangers posed by drugs, alcohol and other intoxicants, particularly among the youth. He said substance abuse harms not only individuals but also families and society at large, weakening the nation’s moral and social fabric. He called for active community engagement and sustained awareness efforts to effectively combat the menace.
Emphasising self-discipline and inner strength, the Governor referred to the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, stating that destructive tendencies can only be overcome through self-control and conscious effort. He urged young people to channel their energy into constructive pursuits and warned that addiction diverts individuals from their inherent potential.
The Governor described substance abuse as a major challenge to the nation’s progress, especially when it affects the youth. Referring to the vision of Narendra Modi, he said that the strength of India’s youth, when positively harnessed, can drive transformative development. He termed the “Nasha Mukt Bharat” campaign a collective national resolve to safeguard the country’s human resources.
Highlighting India’s knowledge traditions, he said practices such as yoga and meditation can strengthen mental resilience and help address contemporary challenges like addiction. He encouraged students to adopt sports, creative arts, skill development and community service as meaningful alternatives that foster discipline and self-confidence.
Governor Acharya also underlined the vital role of families, educational institutions, civil society organisations and law enforcement agencies in creating a supportive and vigilant environment. He advocated a compassionate approach towards individuals struggling with addiction, stressing rehabilitation, counselling and dignified reintegration into society.
Expressing appreciation for Cotton University and the participants, the Governor extended his best wishes for the continued success of the “Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan” and reaffirmed collective commitment towards building a healthy, empowered and drug-free India.
Among those present were Commissioner and Secretary to the Governor SS Meenakshi Sundaram, Registrar (i/c) of Cotton University Dr. Hiren Deka, Dean Prof. Shantanu Sharma, DCP Guwahati Central Sambhavi Mishra, Additional Director of the Narcotics Control Bureau, Guwahati Regional Unit, Prakash Ranjan Mishra, along with faculty members, students and officials of Lok Bhavan.-----------
