Guwahati, 25 February (HS): Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi has strongly condemned the vandalism of a bust of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru at Poilapool in the Lakhipur constituency constituency of Cachar district.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Gogoi said the reported damage to Nehru’s statue using a JCB machine was not merely an act of defacement but an insult to the legacy of a towering freedom fighter and architect of modern India. He asserted that while ideological differences are a part of democracy, attempts to erase democratic history through vandalism are unacceptable.
Alleging that the government’s silence over the incident was disturbing, Gogoi urged the administration to promptly identify those responsible and initiate stringent action against them. He added that the people of Assam would never accept such acts of destruction and disrespect.
