Islamabad, 23 February (HS): Pakistan’s Federal Constitutional Court (FCCP) has ruled that following the 27th Constitutional Amendment, the country’s Supreme Court no longer holds the authority to interpret the Constitution and laws.

Delivering the verdict, Justice Aamir Farooq stated that prior to the 27th amendment, the Supreme Court had the power to interpret

constitutional and legal provisions. However, after the amendment, that authority rests exclusively with the Federal Constitutional Court.

According to official reports, the FCCP further held that it has the authority to review the constitutional validity of laws and can call for records in cases related to legal interpretation. The ruling was issued in connection with a sales tax case. Justice Farooq observed that the 27th amendment effectively removed the Supreme Court’s powers concerning interpretation and review of laws.

The decision is being viewed as a significant development in Pakistan’s judicial framework. Earlier on February 11, the Federal Constitutional Court had restrained the Islamabad High Court from initiating contempt proceedings against the Prime Minister and federal ministers in the Dr Aafia Siddiqui case.

The 27th Constitutional Amendment was passed by Pakistan’s National Assembly in November 2025 and was signed into law by President Asif Ali Zardari on November 13, 2025.
