Washington, DC, 22 February (H.S.): On Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced an immediate escalation of global tariffs from 10% to 15% on imports from all countries, just one day after a landmark Supreme Court ruling curtailed his prior trade authorities.
In a fiery Truth Social post, President Trump lambasted Friday's Supreme Court decision as a ridiculous, poorly written, and extraordinarily anti-American ruling, vowing to raise the 10% Worldwide Tariff on Countries, many of which have been 'ripping' the U.S. off for decades, to the fully allowed, and legally tested, 15% level effective immediately.
He affirmed that the Trump Administration would determine and issue the new and legally permissible Tariffs over the next few months to advance Making America Great Again—GREATER THAN EVER BEFORE!!!
The Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision on Friday, February 20, 2026, struck down Trump's sweeping reciprocal tariffs imposed via the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) of 1977, deeming it an executive overreach beyond powers reserved for genuine national emergencies.
Justices ruled that trade policy required congressional approval, prompting Trump's initial 10% baseline tariff under alternative Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, which permits up to 15% temporary levies (maximum 150 days) without prior legislative consent.
Trump's hike invokes this seldom-used 1974 provision, targeting nations accused of exploiting U.S. markets, while promising further measures amid ongoing fallout.
Critics, including Senator Chuck Schumer, decry the policy as illegal, but the administration insists it bolsters economic sovereignty. Global markets reacted warily, with potential impacts on allies like India, which is monitoring developments.
