Guwahati, 07 November (HS): Sensation prevailed in the outskirts of Guwahati after the decomposed body of a woman was recovered from an isolated area along National Highway 27 between Khanapara and the Eight Mile Ganesh Temple on Saturday.

According to police, some locals noticed a foul smell emanating from the area. On approaching the spot, they reportedly spotted a human leg and immediately informed the police.

A team from Dispur Police Station rushed to the spot and recovered the body, which had been chopped into several pieces and stuffed into a sack before being dumped there.

During preliminary investigation, police identified the deceased as Jina Baishya, who had reportedly been missing from the city's Koinadhara area for the past 12 days.

The deceased used to work at a 'teer' (traditional archery-based gambling) counter near Ganesh Temple, across the road on the Meghalaya side, where she was involved in selling teer numbers.

The motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained. Police suspect that the killing could be linked to financial transactions related to illegal teer gambling. However, the exact circumstances surrounding the crime are yet to be established.

A forensic team visited the crime scene and collected evidence. Police have registered a case and sent the body to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for post-mortem examination.

Further investigation into the incident is underway.------------
