Bhubaneswar, 05 November (H.S.) : Odisha Vigilance on Thursday arrested Sujit Kumar Mahanta, Sub-Inspector of Police at Mahulpali Police Station in Sambalpur district, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a complainant to finalise a miscellaneous case registered against him.

According to an official Vigilance statement, Mahanta was the Investigating Officer (IO) of the case and had allegedly demanded and accepted the bribe to complete the proceedings.

The arrest followed a dramatic pursuit by Vigilance officials, who chased the accused on the road and into a pond.

Mahanta is being forwarded to the Court of the Special Judge, Vigilance, Sambalpur.

In this connection, Sambalpur Vigilance Police Station Case No. 21/2026 has been registered against him under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018.

Further investigation into the case is underway.
