Bhubaneswar, 03 November (H.S.): Utkal University authorities have imposed restrictions on students consuming street food and fast food from eateries on the campus following reports of jaundice and diarrhoea among residents of two women's hostels.

The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure after several students reportedly fell ill, raising concerns over food hygiene and safety on the university campus.

University Registrar Swati Mishra said the authorities would conduct inspections of food outlets operating on the campus, including shops at Govinda Sahu Market, to assess the quality of food and compliance with hygiene standards.

She said the inspections would focus on food quality, cleanliness and adherence to prescribed food safety norms. Establishments found violating food safety standards or failing to maintain proper hygiene would be closed down immediately, she added.

The restrictions come after several students residing in Girls' Hostels No. 6 and 7 reportedly developed symptoms of jaundice and diarrhoea following the festival vacation. Some of the affected students were admitted to hospitals for treatment.

The university administration has taken the measures to prevent further cases and ensure the health and safety of students living on the campus.

The proposed inspections of campus eateries are also aimed at identifying possible lapses in food preparation, handling and hygiene practices.
