Kolkata, 03 November (H.S.): Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Smriti Irani launched a scathing attack on the Congress on Tuesday, strongly criticizing the principal opposition party for casting doubts on the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Irani sharply reminded the Congress that it had already suffered defeat in 57 elections long before the SIR, a process aimed at cleaning up and updating voter listswas even initiated. She leveled serious allegations against the Congress leadership, accusing them of systematically undermining constitutional bodies and questioning the integrity of the Election Commission of India (ECI) rather than introspecting on their consecutive electoral failures.

Addressing the media, the senior BJP leader condemned recent statements made by the opposition regarding the voter list revision process. During the press conference, she echoed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stance, emphasizing that while political opposition to the Prime Minister is a natural and accepted part of a vibrant democracy, it should not serve as a pretext to launch calculated attacks on the core democratic institutions of the country.

Questioning the underlying motives of the opposition in resisting the cleanup of voter rolls, Irani delivered a sharp counter-offensive. She pointedly asked why the Congress party is advocating for the restoration of names belonging to deceased individuals if duplicate entries or deceased voters are found on the electoral rolls. The BJP leader alleged that, faced with a continuous string of electoral defeats, the Congress is now attempting to mask its political desperation and strategic failures by leveling baseless allegations against independent and impartial institutions like the Election Commission.
