New Delhi, 03 November (H.S.): The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken cognisance of media reports alleging the trafficking of girls from border districts of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan to cities across Maharashtra.
The Commission has issued notices to the governments and Directors General of Police of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra, directing them to submit detailed reports on the matter within two weeks.
According to media reports, poverty and other socio-economic hardships in the border districts of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan allegedly compel some parents to sell their daughters to middlemen for amounts ranging from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. The intermediaries subsequently traffic these young girls by using forged documents and falsely presenting them as their adopted daughters.
Once the girls attain adulthood, their residential addresses are allegedly changed to conceal their identities. They are then sold for amounts ranging from Rs 35 lakh to Rs 40 lakh in different cities across Maharashtra for the purpose of sexual exploitation and prostitution.
