New Delhi, 03 November (H.S.): IndiGo Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Willie Walsh on Tuesday announced that the airline expects to induct a total of 14 narrow-body Airbus A321XLR aircraft into its fleet by the end of December 2027, as it prepares to expand its international operations and strengthen its long-haul connectivity.
Speaking at a conference in the national capital, Walsh said IndiGo currently has four A321XLR aircraft in its fleet and expects to add another aircraft by the end of this year. He noted that the extended range of these aircraft would enable the airline to expand its international network and connect more destinations across overseas markets.
Addressing the Aviation India and South Asia 2026 conference, Walsh emphasised that the airline would continue to prioritise short-haul operations, supported by its highly competitive and cost-efficient operating model.
Walsh said IndiGo had discontinued operations using leased wide-body Boeing 787 aircraft and expected to begin receiving its Airbus A350-900 aircraft from the second quarter of 2028.
He cautioned that considerable preparation would be required before the airline could commence operations with the A350 aircraft. Emphasising the importance of maintaining its existing operational strengths, he said the excitement surrounding the induction of the A350 should not divert the airline's attention from its short-haul narrow-body operations, which currently maintained a highly efficient cost structure.
On airport infrastructure, Walsh stressed the need for effective partnerships between airlines and airport operators. He said airports should remain sharply focused on ensuring that their investments were directed towards the right priorities. He also reiterated his concerns over high airport charges and taxes, which he has criticised on previous occasions.
IndiGo is aiming to expand its overall fleet to 600 aircraft by 2030. The airline currently operates more than 440 aircraft, reflecting its continued expansion plans across domestic and international markets.
