Kolkata, 02 November (H.S.) : Commotion ensued at the West Bengal Legislative Assembly premises on Monday morning after the body of a worker was discovered inside a washroom in the canteen department. The deceased has been identified as Umesh Chandra Das, who had been working as a temporary employee under a contractor agency at the assembly canteen for the past 15 years. Upon receiving the information, personnel from the Hastings and Hare Street police stations reached the spot, recovered the body, and sent it for a post-mortem examination.

A case has been registered in connection with the incident, and Assembly Speaker Rathindranath Basu has been apprised of the developments.

According to police sources, Das was found lying unconscious inside the canteen washroom at around 9:10 AM on Monday. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Originally a resident of Kolkata's Tiljala area, Das reportedly stayed at the assembly canteen premises for work. On Monday morning, he went to the washroom after waking up.

When he did not come out for a long time, his colleagues called out to him. Receiving no response, they broke open the door and found him lying senseless on the floor.

The exact cause of death remains a mystery. Police stated that preliminary investigations revealed no visible injury marks on the body, nor are there any immediate signs of foul play or a conspiracy. No official complaint has been lodged regarding the incident so far. Investigators are awaiting the post-mortem report to ascertain the actual cause of death. Considering the sensitivity of the location, a team from the Detective Department (DD) Homicide wing of the Kolkata Police has also reached the spot. The police have secured the scene and its surrounding areas, and a detailed investigation is currently underway.
