Pakistan Fined for Slow Over-Rate in Tri-Series Final; Players Face 5% Match-Fee Deduction

Dubai, 02 November (H.S.): Pakistan have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during the final of the ODI Tri-Series against Sri Lanka, played in Lahore on Saturday, October 31. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has imposed a penalty amounting to five per cent of the match fee on the Pakistani players.

The ICC announced on Monday that Pakistan were found to be one over short of the required rate after allowances for time lost during the match had been taken into consideration. Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, teams are penalised five per cent of their players’ match fees for every over they fail to bowl within the allotted time.

Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi admitted the slow over-rate offence and accepted the proposed sanction. Consequently, there was no requirement for a formal hearing.

Despite the disciplinary penalty, Pakistan had reason to celebrate, having successfully chased down a target of 326 runs to defeat Sri Lanka and clinch the tri-series title. The hosts secured a three-wicket victory with nine balls to spare.

Pakistan’s successful pursuit of 326 also equalled the record for the highest successful run chase in the final of a men’s One-Day International tournament.
