New Delhi, 02 November (H.S.): The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a petition filed by alleged conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar, who had sought a stay on his conviction and sentence in a criminal case.

The Tis Hazari Court had convicted Chandrasekhar on August 20 under Sections 170, 189 and 507 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). He was subsequently sentenced on August 29 in connection with allegations that he had impersonated a Supreme Court judge and attempted to influence a special judge hearing a corruption case.

According to the prosecution, while in judicial custody, Chandrasekhar gained access to the mobile phone of a police constable, Manjeet. He allegedly used the phone to contact the official landline number of the special judge hearing the corruption case against him.

The trial court had also directed that Constable Manjeet’s role be examined afresh. It observed that an investigation was necessary to establish how Chandrasekhar gained access to the constable’s mobile phone and what role the police official had allegedly played in the entire conspiracy.

Chandrasekhar allegedly first introduced himself as the private secretary of a Supreme Court judge and subsequently impersonated the judge himself. He is accused of attempting to exert pressure on the special judge, Poonam Chaudhary, to secure bail and influence the judicial outcome of the corruption case.

The prosecution alleged that the calls were intended to persuade the special judge to grant him bail at the earliest and that threats of adverse professional consequences were also made if she did not comply.
