his greetings to the people on the occasion of the Nongkrem Dance, one of the
most significant cultural festivals of the Khasi community, highlighting its
importance in preserving the state's rich cultural heritage and strengthening
community bonds.
In his message, the Chief Minister said, “Ka Shad Nongkrem
basuk bakmen ia phi baroh!” (Wishing everyone a happy and blessed Nongkrem
Dance).
Describing the Shad Nongkrem, also known as the Nongkrem
Dance, as a grand celebration of the uniqueness of Khasi culture, Sangma
expressed hope that the occasion would foster stronger bonds among communities
and promote peace and harmony in Meghalaya and the country.
The Nongkrem Dance, celebrated annually at Smit in the East
Khasi Hills district, is a major traditional festival of the Khasi people.
It is associated with thanksgiving and prayers for a good harvest,
prosperity and the well-being of the community. The festival is organised under
the stewardship of the Syiem of Khyrim, with traditional rituals and elaborate
