Kolkata, 02 November (H.S.) : The dilapidated and neglected parks situated along Canal East Road and Canal West Road in the metropolis will soon undergo a massive transformation. West Bengal Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Agnimitra Paul inspected these parks on Monday and issued strict directives to officials for their comprehensive redevelopment. The minister proposed elevating these spaces beyond mere cleaning and beautification, transforming them into multi-purpose community hubs equipped with dedicated facilities for yoga, children's tuition classes, and indoor sports.

During her inspection, Minister Paul was accompanied by Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Commissioner Smita Pandey, alongside police and other administrative officials. Expressing strong dissatisfaction over the neglected state and crumbling infrastructure of the parks, she called for a complete overhaul of the premises. Pointing to the vast open spaces available, Paul suggested zoning the parks for diverse activities. She emphasized developing dedicated areas for yoga, meditation, and wellness activities, particularly catering to senior citizens, while also considering provisions for conducting children's tuition classes.

Furthermore, she proposed incorporating indoor recreational facilities, including table tennis, along with the necessary infrastructure. To ensure the sustainable maintenance of these specific amenities, the minister suggested exploring a nominal fee-based membership system. Issuing clear instructions to the officials present, Paul stated, There is ample space available here. We can divide it into distinct sections and develop facilities for various activities. I want the entire area properly renovated; merely superficial or cosmetic interventions will not resolve the underlying issues.

In addition to new amenities, the minister stressed the urgent need for extensive civil and infrastructural repairs, including the restoration of damaged flooring, proper paving, and the renovation of dilapidated sections. Flagging concerns over inadequate illumination, she strictly directed officials to repair and repaint rusted light poles and ensure sufficient lighting throughout the premises.

This inspection is part of a broader master plan aimed at upgrading neighbourhood parks and public spaces along the Canal East and West Roads in the Salt Lake-Bidhannagar area. The ultimate goal of the initiative is to make local parks cleaner, greener, safer, and highly accessible for residents across all age groups.
