Guwahati, 2 November (HS): Assam is set to get a Skill India International Centre (SIIC) to provide internationally recognised skill training and enhance overseas employment opportunities for the state's youth.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for establishing the centre was exchanged between the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), Government of India, and the Government of Assam at the Northeast Tourism & Hospitality Skill Conclave 2026 held at Radisson Blu Hotel in Guwahati on Monday.
The conclave was attended by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Education Jayant Chaudhary and Assam Minister for Skill, Employment and Entrepreneurship Biswajit Daimary.
The proposed centre will strengthen Assam's skill development ecosystem by providing industry-aligned training, internationally recognised certifications and better access to overseas employment opportunities.
Another key development was the declaration of a cluster under the PM-SETU initiative involving the MSDE, Assam government, National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), Numaligarh Refinery Limited and Oil India Limited.
Addressing the gathering, Daimary stressed the need to equip Assam's youth with industry-relevant skills to access emerging employment opportunities globally. He also highlighted the potential of the tourism and hospitality sector in the Northeast and called for stronger collaboration among the government, industry and skill development institutions.
Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary emphasised strengthening the skill development ecosystem in the Northeast and creating pathways for international employment.
The conclave also featured a workshop on international mobility in the tourism and hospitality sector, bringing together stakeholders to discuss industry requirements, global skill standards, training opportunities and employment prospects abroad.-------------
