Recognition for outstanding intelligence gathering and counter-terrorism operations 24 members of a terror network arrested and wanted gangster extradited from Georgia

Chandigarh, 01 November (H.S.): Haryana Police has earned national recognition for its professional competence, operational efficiency and courage, with 10 officers and personnel of its Special Task Force (STF) selected for the prestigious Union Home Minister’s Medal for Excellence for 2026.

The medals, announced on October 31 on the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, recognise outstanding contributions in Intelligence and Special Operations (Counter-Terrorism).

In the Intelligence category, SSP Wasim Akram, DSP Pradeep, Sub-Inspector Varun and Constable Varun Jangra have been selected. In the Special Operations category, the awardees include DSP Aman Kumar, Sub-Inspectors Gaurav Singh, Randeep Singh, Kapil and Sandeep, and Constable Sajan Singh.

Instituted by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs on February 1, 2024, the award recognises exceptional professional skills, dedication, distinguished service and outstanding contributions by police personnel in challenging operations. Its key categories include Special Operations, Excellence in Investigation, Forensic Science and Intelligence.

The STF team selected in the Special Operations category has been recognised for its significant role in a major counter-terrorism operation targeting the network of Pakistan-based terrorist Shahzad Bhatti. Acting on precise intelligence inputs, the team used technical surveillance, digital evidence analysis and coordination with police agencies across states to bust a terror module operating in Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. The operation resulted in the arrest of 24 terrorists and their associates.

The Intelligence team has also been recognised for a major international achievement involving the extradition of wanted gangster Venkat Garg from Georgia to India. A resident of Ambala, Garg was wanted in 34 serious criminal cases, including murder, attempt to murder, extortion, illegal arms possession and organised crime.

Through sustained intelligence gathering and coordination with international agencies, the STF played a crucial role in bringing him back to India on June 11, 2026. Investigations revealed that he had allegedly fled abroad after fraudulently obtaining a passport and was operating his criminal network from there. As many as 23 cases had been registered against him before he left India, while 11 more were registered during his stay overseas.

Haryana Director General of Police Ajay Singhal congratulated all the selected officers and personnel, saying the achievement reflected the force’s professional excellence, dedication and teamwork. He said their contribution in tackling terrorism and organised crime, as well as bringing internationally wanted criminals within the ambit of law, had enhanced Haryana Police’s reputation nationally.

The DGP added that the recognition was not merely an individual achievement but a reflection of the collective commitment and dedication of the entire force. He expressed confidence that the awardees’ accomplishments would inspire other personnel to perform their duties with sincerity, integrity and commitment.
