Thiruvananthapuram, 01 Nov (H.S.):
Heavy rain is likely in parts of Kerala until Wednesday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing yellow alerts for several districts as weather systems over the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea influence conditions across the state.
Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki are under yellow alert on Sunday. The warning covers Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram and Wayanad on Monday, followed by Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur on Tuesday. Kannur and Kasaragod will remain under alert on Wednesday.
The forecast indicates isolated heavy rainfall, defined by the IMD as precipitation ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within 24 hours. Strong winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph are also possible.
According to the weather bulletin, a well-marked low-pressure area over the southeastern Bay of Bengal, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the Andaman Sea has intensified into a depression. It is likely to strengthen into a cyclonic storm within the subsequent 24 hours.
The system is expected to move west-northwestwards and reach the west-central Bay of Bengal near the Andhra Pradesh coast by the evening of November 2.
Meanwhile, a cyclonic circulation persists over the southern Maharashtra coast and adjoining areas. A trough extends towards this circulation from the southeastern Arabian Sea off the southern Kerala–Karnataka coast, contributing to the rainfall outlook.
The IMD has warned of rough weather over several parts of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea.
On November 1, winds of 60–90 kmph, gusting to 100 kmph, are forecast over northern parts of the southern Bay of Bengal and southern parts of the west-central Bay.
The bulletin stated that fishing was unrestricted along the Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep coasts on October 31. That advisory was specific to Saturday and should not be read as clearance for subsequent days. Fishermen should check updated warnings before venturing out.
