New Delhi, 09 October (H.S.): The results of by-elections to five Assembly constituencies across three states and one Lok Sabha constituency in Assam appeared to be favouring the ruling parties, with their candidates either securing victories or establishing leads, according to the latest trends.

In Assam’s Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency, BJP candidate Devashish Sharma was leading AIUDF chief Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal by a substantial margin, according to the Election Commission’s counting updates. The vote count was still underway at the time of the initial reports.

According to the Election Commission’s website, Ashok Anand of the All India N.R. Congress (AINRC) won the Thattanchavady Assembly seat in Puducherry. In Tamil Nadu, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) candidates K. Maragatham Kumaravel and P. Sathyabama were leading in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram constituencies, respectively. Both had previously served as MLAs representing the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) before resigning and joining the ruling party.

In West Bengal, BJP candidates Shankar Sarkar and Hasirani Rath were leading in the Rejinagar and Nandigram Assembly constituencies, respectively. Hasirani Rath is the mother of Chandranath Rath, the former personal assistant to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who was murdered. Rejinagar is a Muslim-majority constituency.
