New Delhi, 09 October (H.S.): Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has taken stringent disciplinary action by dismissing Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, a professor at the university’s School of Social Sciences and a Congress Member of Parliament from Manipur, from service with immediate effect.
According to a statement issued by JNU, the order was issued following the completion of an inquiry into allegations of sexual harassment by the university’s Internal Committee and on the basis of its recommendations. Based on the committee’s inquiry report and findings, the committee had recommended a major penalty against Professor Akoijam under the applicable University Grants Commission (UGC) service regulations and the relevant provisions of the Central Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules.
Several female students had reportedly filed formal complaints of sexual harassment against Professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, following which the university’s Internal Complaints Committee initiated an inquiry into the matter. After the inquiry was completed, the university administration took the disciplinary decision.
It is noteworthy that Professor Akoijam is also a Congress MP representing the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha constituency.
