Kolkata, October 9 (HS): West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday warned of action against those who insult Hindutva, saffron and Sanatan Dharma, addressing a doctors’ conference at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Referring to the attack on the residence of former CPI(M) MP and advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, Adhikari said he had directed the police to act, following which one person was arrested. However, he objected to Bhattacharya describing the incident as a “Hindutva-inspired attack”.
“You have said that Hindutva supporters carried out the attack. Through this statement, you have targeted the entire Hindu community. Action will also be taken against this,” Adhikari said.
The Calcutta High Court has sought a report from the state government on the attack.
Adhikari also targeted Left-wing groups following the recent confrontation between Left student organisations and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at Jadavpur University.
“I will uproot the brainwashed Naxalites and Communists. I will take to the streets and fight. ABVP’s voice will resonate across all universities,” he said.
The dispute had also triggered controversy over the use of the term “saffron terror”. Reiterating his opposition to such characterisations, Adhikari warned of action against those who insult saffron, Hindutva and Sanatan Dharma.
The Chief Minister also referred to the RG Kar rape and murder case, assuring the victim’s family that justice would be delivered. The victim’s mother, now a BJP MLA from Panihati, was present at the event.
“Two days ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji said, ‘We will do it.’ We will do it in the Abhaya case as well,” Adhikari said.
The victim’s mother questioned the continuation of Narayan Swaroop Nigam, the then health secretary, in his position despite allegations raised during the RG Kar controversy.
Responding to her concerns, Adhikari said his government had taken action against three police officers—Vineet Goyal, Indira Mukherjee and Abhishek Gupta—after assuming office, adding that further action would follow.
