New Delhi, 08 October (H.S.):
Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya M. Scindia said on Thursday that India aims to double its current 5G user base of 550 million to one billion by 2030. He said that while the country had once lagged behind the world in 4G, it had now resolved to lead the world in 6G.
The Union Minister made the remarks while addressing the 10th edition of the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2026 at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi. Jyotiraditya M. Scindia said, “October 7 will remain an important day in the history of our country. It is a matter of pride for the citizens that on October 7, Prime Minister Narendra Modi completed 25 years of his tenure in public service as the head of government.”
Scindia said that India currently has 550 million 5G users and is targeting one billion users by 2030, as the country seeks to take its telecommunications and digital technology capabilities to global markets. He said India’s broadband subscriber base had grown from 60 million in 2014 to more than 1.1 billion today. He added that the country also has 1.35 billion mobile subscribers.
At the inaugural ceremony of the 10th edition of IMC 2026, Scindia said that 5G had become the fastest-adopted 5G technology in the world in India. “By 2030, our target is to increase the number of 5G users from 550 million to one billion,” he said.
He added, “We were behind the world in 4G. In 5G, we caught up with the world. Now, our resolve is to lead the world in 6G.”
Speaking about 6G, Scindia said that 90 institutions are part of the Bharat 6G Alliance and that India had secured 7,700 patents, including 4,400 international patents.
