Tamulpur (Assam), 08 October (HS): The Tamulpur district administration has tightened regulations on the procurement, storage, transportation and sale of Laligur, a liquid jaggery product, following complaints that it was being misused for the illegal production of country liquor.

Tamulpur District Magistrate Simi Karan, exercising powers under Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, has issued a special order covering the entire district to curb the misuse of Laligur.

Under the order, no individual or business will be permitted to store, transport, purchase or sell liquid Lali, Laligur or Laligur powder without prior permission and registration from the district administration. Traders, institutions, wholesalers and retailers dealing in Laligur have been directed to register themselves with the administration within 15 days of the issuance of the order.

The registration requirement will also apply to those purchasing Laligur for cattle feed or legitimate industrial and agricultural purposes. The administration has further prohibited the transportation, storage or sale of Laligur by misrepresenting it as ordinary jaggery or by providing incorrect information.

All traders and transporters have been instructed to maintain proper records and relevant documents concerning the purchase, storage and sale of Laligur and produce them before authorised officials during inspections.

The district administration said illegal liquor poses a serious threat to public health, safety and human lives. Violators of the order will face action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, besides other applicable legal provisions.
