
Prayagraj, 8 Oct (HS): The 200th birth
anniversary of Samuel Vedanayagam Pillai (1826-1889), a pioneer of modern Tamil
literature, was organized successfully by the Department of English on
Thursday. To mark the occasion, Prof. Ashish Alexander, Dean and Head of
English department gave an inspiring lecture to the audiences, highlighting the
contribution of literature in nation building. Earlier students of the
university presented the writer's bio-sketch and read extracts from his novels.
The history of Tamil language and literature was also shared during the event.
A special highlight of the program was singing of Tamil Anthem by the students.
Prof. Alexander said that his department is committed to
foster national integration through their activities, and bring different
cultures, languages and regions together. Prof. Wilson Jeberson, Dr Klinsega
Jeberson, Dr Shivani S. Verma and Dr Apsara Stanley responded to the lecture
and shared their thoughts. The program was conducted by the students of the department.
Prof. Nishi Tripathi, Dr Mahwash Hasan, Dr Hira Bose, Zenith Denis, Ankita
Nath, Shriyut Srivastava, Dr P. Stanley, Sam Bright, Dr Lalchungnung Gangte and
others were also present during the programme.
